SCDA's Governance Model

Learn How We're Improving Our Governance Structure to Better Meet SCDA's Future Needs

SCDA recently went through a strategic planning process where the SCDA Board determined an alternate structure to SCDA's current governance model would be explored to ensure SCDA is well-positioned for the future. The Board's purpose in evaluating the current governance structure and ultimately making changes to it is to allow for full integration and streamlining of resources to improve our ability to meet SCDA's future needs. Our goal is to provide networking and educational programming for all oral health care providers treating patients with special needs rather than individual practice areas which are distinct, but also have significant areas of overlap. The work accomplished by the Board has resulted in changes in the composition of the Board. Changes are also being made to the nominations and elections process, the existing committees and their make-up, along with the transition of the current structure of the Components to Councils and the development of a Council on Fellowship. These changes will help streamline operations and engage the SCDA membership in the organization as a whole rather than in fragmented areas. We believe that the changes we have made in our governance structure will help us be more efficient and effective in meeting the needs of our members, both now and in the future.

We are committed to ensuring that SCDA maintains a high level of responsiveness to our member needs, and is able to meet our strategic plan goals quickly and efficiently (to review SCDA's strategic plan, please click here).

The SCDA Board wants to ensure the Board is both nimble and progressive, meaning that we are able to act promptly and proactively in a thoughtful yet effective manner. Based on those high-level goals, the Executive Director and the Board worked on developing a revised governance structure.

The Board has now approved the new structure and outlined below you will find detail regarding the following key changes being implemented:

  • The current Boards of all three Component Groups will be dissolved after the 2012-2013 term.
  • Councils will be established for the three practice areas represented by the Components with a Chair and Vice-Chair for each Council.
    • SCDA Council of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities
    • SCDA Council of Geriatric Dentistry
    • SCDA Council of Hospital Dentistry
  • The SCDA Board will continue to appoint the Vice-President for the 2013-2014 term.
  • The SCDA Board will seek nominations for 2 Directors-at-Large for the 2013-2014 term.
  • The new Nominations process will be implemented for the 2014-2015 term and will include elections for Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer and Directors-at-Large (2). Also during this time period, Council members will elect their respective Council  Vice-Chair.
  • A Council on Fellowship will be formed in early 2013 to begin developing one comprehensive Fellowship exam that will be administered in April 2014. The current three Fellowship exams will continue to be administered in April 2013 and will be utilized as the basis for the new exam.
  • The Awards Committee will continue to solicit nominations and select recipients for SCDA's four awards (Chasko, Ettinger, Berk and Kamen).
  • The Education Committee will transition to an overarching committee responsible for all educational programs, including the Annual Meeting.

Ongoing Evaluation and Feedback

As with any new change, we need to ensure that we are moving things in the right direction for our organization. We will be diligent in evaluating these governance changes, and we are confident that our new Board structure will allow us the flexibility to act quickly to make adjustments as needed. We also want to hear from you, our members, about these changes and how you see them working for our organization. If you have any questions or would like to provide your feedback, please contact SCDA at scda@scdaonline.org.
